Energy Storage in Texas
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) store electricity when power demand is low, at night, or when solar power is abundant then discharge it when power is needed most. The deployment of BESS is growing in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), providing much needed dispatchable electricity. BESS is the fastest growing technology in ERCOT and BESS is now participating in all of ERCOT’s ancillary service products, which are designed to maintain grid stability and reliability. ERCOT data shows BESS is increasing grid reliability and driving affordability.
BESS adapts swiftly and effectively to dynamic grid conditions, efficiently addressing conditions such as the evening decline in solar output, unexpected outages of thermal plants, fluctuations in wind generation, grid frequency shifts, and unanticipated demand changes. BESS is scalable and can be deployed anywhere in Texas, driving reliability while providing communities with new tax revenue and landowners with steady income. And with new fire safety and decommissioning laws, landowners and communities are protected, which will facilitate responsible and needed growth of BESS to bolster grid reliability.
